Brevard Skills in the Park - Session 1: Bike Setup, Body Position, Braking, Shifting and Cornering

Bike check, tire pressure and suspension setup. If the bike isn’t set up well, it doesn’t feel good and it isn’t very fun to ride! We’re going to start the first session in the series with a bike and suspension setup mini clinic.

Suspension Setup:

Suspension setup is often overlooked, but it's critical for performance, comfort, and safety. We’ll spend some time in this clinic dialing in your suspension settings, so your bike feels more responsive and stable.

FUNdamental skills: In this clinic, we’ll cover several foundational skills that build the confidence to ride well.

  • Body Position: Proper body position is crucial for balance, control, and safe maneuvers like jumping, dropping, descending, and cornering. We'll focus on maintaining a stable and balanced stance to help you feel more confident on the bike.

  • Braking: We’ll focus on braking technique, from modulating the brakes to avoiding skidding. Proper braking will help you stop quickly and smoothly, helping you ride faster with control.

  • Shifting: The smoother your shifting, the less you’ll have to think about gears, allowing you to focus on the trail. We’ll give you a quick lesson in shifting so you’re always in the right gear at the right time.

  • Cornering: Applying good body position and braking techniques will help you ride corners with greater confidence and control.

Bonus! Purchase tickets to all four clinics in this series and receive 15% off a private lesson to continue your skills development one-on-one!

Coontree last chance for the season out and back clinic.

Join me for an out and back lesson on this lesser ridden, seasonal to bikes trail. We’ll meet at the Coontree Picnic Area and work on some skills necessary to confidently navigate this excellent section of trail.

Who: Riders wanting to feel safer and more confident on this steep and slightly technical seasonal trail. Open to 4 riders only.

Why: Because you asked for it! I received a request to offer a clinic on this trail so I’ve decided to go for it!

What: We’ll work on stability, balance and braking skills in the picnic area. We’ll work our way up the trail sessioning features and sections of the trail as we go. Since Coontree is steepest at the top, this will build our skills and confidence as we go. We’ll then shred on back down the trail!

Brevard Skills in the Park - Session 3: Slow Speed Skills and Revisiting Cornering

Slow Speed Skills: The Most Underrated Skill in Mountain Biking

In mountain biking, slow speed skills often don’t get the credit they deserve, but they’re key to riding well across any terrain. If you can master riding slow, it opens the door to riding faster with more control and confidence.

Track Stands:
Maintaining balance while your bike stays stationary. This skill builds core strength, balance, and bike handling, all of which translate into smoother rides on both technical climbs and descents.

Slow Tight Turns:
These are essential for tackling tight corners, especially in challenging areas like Pisgah National Forest. Whether you're riding uphill or downhill, these turns force you to maintain control at slow speeds, helping you prepare for more difficult terrain.

Cornering:
Mastering cornering is a game changer. In this clinic, we’ll focus on how to handle wider descending turns with precision, moving faster while still staying in control. We’ll also revisit the technique of braking through corners, ensuring you’re equipped to navigate turns safely and efficiently.

High-Speed Cornering:
Now, let's dial it up! In this session, we’ll push our speed through corners and notice how our body position and bike handling adjust as we increase pace. This is where you’ll learn how to push the limits of cornering technique, making adjustments to stay smooth at higher speeds while also refining how to brake effectively during turns.

Note:
While the terrain in this clinic may vary from the example photo provided, the principles we’re focusing on are universal. Whether you're riding tight, technical trails or fast descents, these skills will make you a better, more confident rider on any trail.

Bonus! Purchase tickets to all four clinics in this series and receive 15% off a private lesson to continue your skills development one-on-one!

Brevard Skills in the Park - Session 4: Intro to Jumps and Drops

Finally, the Evening We've All Been Waiting For: Introduction to Jumps and Drops!

Get ready to take your riding skills to the next level with an exciting evening focused on jumps and drops!

We’ll begin by warming up with a review of wheel lifts and transitioning into wheel lifts at speed, followed by practicing bump jumps.

Roll Downs:
We’ll kick things off with my drop box, using it to practice rolling the bike down obstacles. This exercise will help you tackle similar challenges you'll encounter on the trails of DuPont and Pisgah, building your confidence and control while descending.

Drops:
Next, we’ll increase our focus on drops. Using my drop box, you’ll adjust your speed to explore different techniques for riding drops of all sizes. We’ll dive into discussions about when and why to adjust your approach, making sure you understand the finer points of safely and efficiently handling drops.

Bump Jumps:
We’ll take things up a notch by using my stunts to practice bumping both wheels over obstacles with a wheel lift. This technique is key for clearing smaller obstacles in a controlled, smooth way.

Jumps:
Finally, we’ll get airborn! Using my jump ramp, you’ll practice jumping both wheels off the ground. This segment will help you build skill, comfort, and control while flying through the air, boosting your confidence in your ability to clear jumps with precision.

Bonus! Purchase tickets to all four clinics in this series and receive 15% off a private lesson to continue your skills development one-on-one!

Rooted Mtb Fest SAVE THE DATE

something for everyone

Registration opens mid April. Rooted is an all skill level women’s mountain bike festival. This event was created because nothing like it exists within a ten hour (or more?!) radius of western New York. Festival creator, Heather Kinal, wanted a place to learn new skills and ride with other women and decided to create what couldn’t be found locally. She wanted to build an event that other women would want to travel hours to participate and we were so stoked last year to have women join us from 15 different states and Canada!

We are so excited to announce that we are officially a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit!

Non-Profit Mission Statement - Rooted is a safe and welcoming community, empowering women in nature through education, encouragement, and cultivating an open-minded perspective while supporting local outdoor resources and regional recreation spaces.

Festival Mission Statement - Rooted mountain bike festival is a women-centric community striving to destigmatize mountain bike culture and empower anyone who identifies as a woman or non-binary person, of all body types and abilities.

Values

Safety - of the body, mind, and soul

Love - for self, for others, and for the space we occupy.

Welcoming - Of everyone who wants to be in the space

Open-Mindedness - To try new things, to meet new people, and to exit your comfort zone.

Community - Centering and sustaining the Rooted community, our local communities, and the international riding community.

The coaches’ progressive approach to teaching starts students in a low-consequence setting, using our “progression props”, giving them time to focus on proper body position, timing, and execution of fundamental and complex skills. Then they methodically add the next level of complexity for each skill so that their students are powered by the confidence of these successful successions.

Regardless if your goals for the weekend are to learn the basics of mountain biking or learn how to catch more air and ride faster - our coaches tailor the lessons to your goals. Each student will also receive some “fun homework” with a skills re-cap sheet and study guide to help them continue to progress well beyond our weekend together.

SheVentures Earth

Hey Adventurer! (if you're a details person checkout our website for way more info)

Welcome to SheVentures Camp located in the heart of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Join us and tons of other partners for what we hope and believe, will be a weekend when the joy of adventure transforms your soul (yeah, we know that sounds super cheesy but it’s kinda true.) We also hope you'll leave knowing something you didn't...like how to rock climb or mountain bike or build a fire.

This time is about connecting or re-connecting us to the strength outdoor adventure brings. It'll be scary. Anything new is. It'll also be empowering as your determination to overcome inspires more courage deep within. Even if we fail along the way. Pooping in the woods, climbing boulders or running up a big a** hill strip us of our comfort and prove we’re more capable than we can imagine.

It’s also about connecting with other women who can support our weekend and maybe even support our daily life adventures. We know deep friendships are forged in the midst of challenge and we’re confident we’ll find inspiration and encouragement from each other.

One of our hopes is you leave camp equipped to re-create the weekend on your own. We wanna give you everything necessary to venture out in the woods for a weekend of fun. From cooking to starting a fire you'll leave knowledgeable about the basics of outdoor camping and adventuring!

New instructors learn the tools they need to safely and effectively teach, while experienced instructors will increase their level of skill and understanding in teaching and riding theory that the PMBIA Certifications uniquely provide.

A strong focus is given to learning teaching skills in their own right, to develop a sense of this all-important part of a mountain bike lesson. Throughout the course candidates will learn and practice PMBIA’s proven, modern teaching models and skills, enabling them to deliver safe, effective and fun lessons to beginner to low-intermediate riders.

Each day of the 3-day course, instructor candidates will learn riding skills and theory, have plenty of time to practice, and receive personal feedback for their own improvement. Additional workshops covering topics such as bike set-up, risk management and first aid, take place throughout the course to further build knowledge and skills during the course.

PMBIA Kids Teaching Module

KIDS MODULE | 1-DAY KIDS SPECIFIC DEVELOPMENT MODULE

The 1-day Kids Module is a professional training module to further the skills and knowledge of PMBIA instructors.

The 1-day module is packed with value as instructors learn a multitude of tools to develop their teaching, including but not limited to; how to adapt their lessons for children of different age groups, kids-specific bike and equipment set up, risk management and concussion protocols, more strategies for guiding children safely on technical terrain, as well as explore techniques to help manage the behaviour and expectations of children.

While the Kids Module is a great way for Level 1 Instructors to learn more about teaching kids mountain bike programs, it also introduces some new teaching concepts, acting as great preparation for the Level 2 and 3 certifications.

The Kids Module also provides access to the latest PMBIA Reference Guide, Kids Module Booklet (complete with course-specific content), and the Kids Module Worksheet.

  • Ride Kanuga Bike Park (map)

Register here at Radical Roots MTB

Transition Women’s Weekend East will kick off on Friday night with a casual meet-and-greet, facilities tour, and educational opportunities at Industry Nine HQ (150 Westside Dr, Asheville, NC 28806) The coaches and crew would love to get to know you better, mingle a bit, answer any questions, and finalize any registration documents. This is also a great time to get set-up on a demo bike and/or demo wheels if you are planning on demoing a bike or wheels for the weekend. Industry Nine will be treating us to tasty beverages, light snacks, and optional facilities tour and wheel education class.

On Saturday and Sunday we will meet at our special location at Ride Kanuga Bike Park in Hendersonville, NC for a fun-filled day of learning and playing on bikes. You can expect us to split into smaller groups based on goals and previous experience then spend 6-7 hours on the bike each day honing skills, building confidence, riding trails, and deepening your understanding of complex mountain bike techniques. On Saturday night we will gather for a private dinner party at The Hub and Pisgah Tavern, allowing us to relive the fun of day one and continue to get to know each other.

Early bird pricing is $445 until March 31st then it bumps to full price, $495

LAST CHANCE CAT GAP AND BUTTER GAP SKILL SHRED MINI CLINIC

With seasonal trail Cat Gap slated to be permanently closed to bikes once the reroute is completed I thought it might be nice to get out there and session all of those hard moves that I love and our community is about to lose access to once the new trail is completed. There is also a super fun technical section of Butter Gap at the top we are going to lose to reroute and a few other sections along the way. I’ve been trying to get out on these trails as much as I can because it’s an excellent climb with some fun tech moves and I love the descents. Every time I’ve thought “I should do a last chance clinic!” So I’m gonna listen to that and do it. Join me!
